So, which words are giving you the most trouble?

When we speak, we’re able to speak the language we know because we’ve learned how to produce a certain set of sounds. Every language is comprised of a unique set of sounds. Some sounds appear in many languages, and some sounds are unique to a language. The American English sound of [th] for example, doesn’t appear in many other languages.

As a speaker of a foreign language in the United States who has also learned English, the sounds of your language are probably not in complete “alignment” with the sounds of American English. This contributes to some of your words and sounds being difficult to understand.

But it’s more than just sounds.

Your first language also has a unique rhythm that causes your voice to rise and fall without much thought, and some words and phrases to come out quicker or slower than others. Just like making the sounds of your native language, you are able to use the rhythm of your native language without much thought. It’s a learned habit.

A good model is necessary for change.

It’s been said that if you want to learn how to do something new, and do it well, then find a model – someone who already knows how to do it and knows exactly how to do it. When you find someone who is willing to teach you each step of the process, you’ve got yourself a model. That’s what you will have access to with your personal speech coach, Joe Comeau.

When we begin working and practicing together, you’ll learn which specific sounds are currently making your speech sound heavily accented to American ears. Then we’ll put together a specific plan to systematically change each of those sound patterns so that they sound more like general American English. With the right amount of guided practice, any one can make significant changes in the way they pronounce English when they have conversations, deliver presentations, order a large latte or even just ask for directions.

We can discuss your progress plan and evaluate your speech patterns without any obligation or payment at our first meeting. Whether you prefer to work face-to-face or are interested in what’s possible via telelcass (telephone-based) coaching, we can’t start until you contact me.

Give me a call at 888-249-1936 or email joe@myspeechcoach.com. I’d love to hear from you!

Personal Accent Teleclasses

Our training sessions are for native and non-native speakers of American English. We’ll “meet” once per week to work on individualized accent modification sessions that are custom designed to meet the specific challenges of your current accent production patterns. No two individuals receive the same training. Every coaching experience is unique, yet highly structured. The result is clear, effective and more powerful speaking skills. Successful professionals who need to change their heavily-accented speech, speak with influence, and deliver thoughts and ideas with a more polished and inviting style – those are my best clients.

Book a private consultation or arrange a training event for your corporate team by calling 1-888-249-1936.

Accent Coaching Classes

Private sessions or small group classes (up to 5 individuals) will receive instruction on-site with an experienced accent modification trainer, licensed by the American Speech-Hearing & Language Association and certified in the Compton P-ESL Accent Modification Method. The training is effective, motivating and measurable. Each participant begins with a personalized assessment to mark a starting point for change, and completes the course with a measurable, unquestionable follow-up analysis that clearly shows the amount of change, improvement, and accuracy gained. Expect results of at least 50% fewer speech errors with approximately 12 hours of guided coaching.

Corporate Training Events

“I speak for a living, but my Southern/Mid-western/New York/etc.. accent is always a distraction.”

“Our team presents to critical decision makers, but our presentations are awful.”

“I need to present to corporate groups on a weekly basis, and I suck at it.”

These statements have been made by real clients in real situations. Better speaking is a skill that anyone can work on, but few initiate. That’s why those who do stand out from the crowd and get remembered. I’ll show you and teach you what the best speakers do, and what they don’t do. We’ll start with a snapshot of where you are, what you do, and how you feel about speaking today, and finish with a recorded instance of you using your new skills and looking like you were born doing it.
